Since it first won the Best of Panama cupping competition in 2004, the Geisha variety from Hacienda La Esmeralda has become the most award-winning and sought after coffee in the world. In 2017, a small lot from this farm sold at auction for $601/lb. The Geisha variety was collected from wild coffee forests in Southwest Ethiopia in 1931 and eventually planted in Panama in the 1960s. The best examples of this variety, such as those from Hacienda La Esmeralda, show staggering complexity with aromas of jasmine, Earl Grey tea, peach, and lemon.
